Designer Vladimir Kagan and Ralph Pucci International have collaborated on a project to create a limited edition Fiberglass Chair. The chair will be officially introduced at an event on October 29th, 2009 at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York.

The Vladimir Kagan/Ralph Pucci collaboration on the making of the fiberglass chair was born out of a simple conversation and viewing of sketches of Kagan’s 1950’s designs in a variety of materials, including fiberglass that were never developed.
Vladimir Kagan has always wanted to do a plastic chair, as his designs were so ideally suited for the medium. When Ralph Pucci saw some of these designs from the 1950’s, his reaction was quick and simple; why couldn’t his sculptor and mannequin workshop produce these ideas. He also felt the project was very current because of an upcoming exhibit at MOMA by Ron Arad. Ralph reviewed the design sketches with Michael Evert, it was agreed that Vladimir Kagan would use the idea, but design a new chair. Within a week Vladimir produced a miniature clay model of the chair. The following week they started to build a full-scale mockup in clay.
For Vladimir, working with a pliable material was a totally liberating experience. For Ralph it made common sense to utilize the facilities of his mannequin workroom and create something new and different, all in keeping with his thoughts of moving forward.
The result is the limited edition fiberglass collection now on view, produced in foundry black or grey, as well as, white and clear.
The collaboration has worked so well and has so much potential that they started a collection of limited edition sculptures by Vladimir Kagan, again produced and sculptured by Ralph Pucci at the Ralph Pucci workroom and will be introduced in December.
